Kodak Black has once again found himself dealing with legal issues after being arrested in Florida on a drug trafficking charge tied to a 2025 investigation. The rapper, born Bill Kapri, was taken into custody Wednesday by authorities in Orange County. Officials say he is facing one count of trafficking MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy or molly, connected to a police investigation that began after officers responded to reports of gunfire in Orlando last November.
According to investigators, police searched several vehicles near the scene and allegedly discovered cannabis packaged in marked bags, along with pink pills that later tested positive for MDMA. Officers also reported finding a bag containing Kapri’s identification, cash, and a bottle of prescription cough syrup. Authorities claim everyone present denied ownership of the items, though police said Kapri repeatedly requested the money be returned to him.
The 28-year-old rapper appeared in court Thursday where he entered a written not guilty plea, requested a jury trial, and waived appearing at a future arraignment hearing. His attorney argued that his client should receive a reduced $10,000 bond because he voluntarily traveled from California to surrender. The defense also claimed drugs were found inside two vehicles searched in Orlando, but said Black was not inside either vehicle, did not own them, and was not linked to the evidence through fingerprints. While acknowledging probable cause had already been established, his lawyer suggested the case against him was weak, stating, “I know [probable cause] was already found, so I’m not gonna argue p.c., even though it’s really screaming at me.”
Prosecutors asked the court to increase the standard $50,000 bond, arguing Black lacked strong ties to Orlando and requesting that he surrender his passport. His legal team pushed back, saying, “He is a proud Haitian American, but he is an American. He has a U.S. passport. He doesn’t have any plans on leaving the country.”
The judge ultimately set bond at $75,000, citing Black’s lengthy criminal history and a prior failure to appear.
The 28-year-old rapper has repeatedly faced arrests and criminal charges over the years involving weapons, drugs, probation violations, and other offenses. In 2020, he pleaded guilty to federal firearms-related charges and received a prison sentence that was later commuted by Donald Trump. More recently, a 2023 drug possession case against him was dropped after the substance involved was identified as prescribed medication rather than cocaine.
