BLACK HISTORY

2012 Donald Payne, a Democrat, was the 1st African American elected to Congress from the State of New Jersey.

1964 The boxing G.O.A.T. Cassius Clay joins the Nation of Islam and changes his name to “Muhammad Ali”, calling his former name a “slave name”

1857 The Dred Scott decision of the Supreme Court denied Blacks U.S. citizenship and denied the power of Congress to restrict slavery in any federal territory. Scott was an enslaved African American man in the United States who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom, his wife and their two daughters in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857,  “Dred Scott case”. Scott claimed that his family should be granted their freedom because they had lived in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory for four years, where slavery was illegal.  Supreme Court decided 7–2 against Scott, finding that neither he nor any other person of African ancestry could claim citizenship in the United States, and therefore Scott could not bring suit in federal court under diversity of citizenship rules.
