Tomorrow we take a look back into the past where Prince’s Purple Rain Album hit Number 1 and stayed number 1 for a total of 24 weeks.
Back in 1984 the late Prince Rogers Nelson known as an american singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and filmmaker recorded hit album titled Purple Rain which was his the sixth studio album. With hit songs such as “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” being the first two songs on the album both singles topped the US singles charts, while the title track “Purple Rain” itself went to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified 13-times platinum by the RIAA and by 2008 it sold over 25 million copies worldwide, making it the third-best-selling soundtrack album of all time.
Prince wrote all of the songs on the album with the input of fellow band members from The Revolution. The album consisted of 2 sides the first side having 5 songs and the second having 4 songs. The album won two Grammy Awards in 1985 , Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, and the album was nominated for Album of the Year.
In the United States the album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 the week of July 14, 1984 with approximately 1.5 million copies sold. It spent 4 weeks on the chart and then it reached number one on August 4, 1984. According to Billboard magazine, the album spent 24 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard albums chart from August 4, 1984 to January 18, 1985, and more than 32 weeks in the top 10.
After Prince’s death in April 2016, the album re-charted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 69,000 copies in the following week. It became one of the best-selling albums of the year in the US with 487,000 sold in 2016. According to Billboard, within less than a month after Prince’s death, four of the top ten songs on the Hot Rock Songs belonged to tracks off Purple Rain, with the title track coming in at No. 1.Purple Rain. It won Soundtrack of the Year at the American Music Awards in 2016. Purple Rain was the thirteenth best selling album of 2016 with 487,000 album sales.
“Purple Rain”when there’s blood in the sky – red and blue = purple… purple rain pertains to the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith/god guide you through the purple rain. As many fans may remember Prince’s song “1999” and some of the same meanings for it was said that the world was to end in the year 1999.
The death of this icon was something that the world could never forget, but his legacy forever lives on through his fans and his music.
